Give Your Old Lamp a Makeover: Easy DIY Vintage Brass Look

| |

This easy lamp makeover is an affordable way to achieve the look of pricey lamps without breaking the bank. With a few simple steps, some spray paint, and a touch of Antique Gold Rub’NBuff, I transformed this cheap lamp into a beautiful accent piece for my home decor.

I’ve had this little lamp for at least 15 years. It was an inexpensive find from Dollar General that I used in my boys’ bedrooms over the years. Despite its humble origins, this versatile table lamp has traveled with us through multiple moves. Its size, style, and black color made it a perfect fit for a boys’ room. However, it’s spent the past few years tucked away in storage, waiting for a little creativity to bring it back to life. When I decided to style it for my dining room, I knew a vintage brass finish would give this outdated lamp the timeless elegance it deserves.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Remove the Old Lamp Shade

Begin by removing the old shade from the lamp. If it’s in good shape, you can reuse it for this project or set it aside for a future makeover. I’m saving this one for another DIY coming up and I found a scalloped shade for just $15 that was the perfect match for my lamp base makeover. If you’re purchasing a new lamp shade, it’s important to note the size and structure of the previous lampshade to use as a guide.

Step 2: Give the Lamp a Good Cleaning

Before you start, clean the entire surface of the lamp thoroughly. Use a damp cloth to wipe away any dust or dirt. Ensuring the lamp base is clean and dry is the first thing you should do to ensure the paint adheres properly.

Step 3: Prep with Painter’s Tape

Use painter’s tape to cover the socket and any electrical components. This will prevent spray paint from damaging the functionality of your lamp.

Step 4: Apply a Base Coat of Black Paint

Place your lamp on a protected surface, like a box or paper, to catch any overspray. Apply a thin layer of black flat or satin spray primer to the lamp base. The black color provides a rich background for the vintage brass finish. Let the first coat dry completely before deciding if a second coat is needed for even coverage.

Step 5: Add the Vintage Brass Finish

Once the black paint is dry, use a chip brush or a bristle brush to apply Antique Gold Rub’NBuff to the lamp. Work in small sections, using a thin layer to build up the vintage brass effect. Blend the finish as you go for a natural, aged look. Let the lamp dry completely before handling.

Pro Tip: Seamless Lamp Cord Finish

Depending on the color of your lamp cord and your preference, you may want to apply Rub’NBuff to the cord for a seamless look. To add the Rub’NBuff, line your work surface with wax paper and apply it with a paintbrush. It’s a good idea to wear gloves since the process requires lots of handling of the cord. Be sure to avoid putting Rub’NBuff on the plug for safety reasons.

Step 6: Attach the New Lamp Shade and Light Bulb

Now for the fun part—styling your revamped lamp! Add your new shade and a light bulb. While I had planned to update the previous shade, the scalloped shade I found was too charming to pass up. It adds a personal touch and a whimsical detail that perfectly complements the vintage brass finish.

Step 7: Style and Enjoy

Place your lamp in your chosen spot and admire your handiwork. For me, this little lamp now graces a side table in my dining room, tying together my vintage brass mirror and chandelier. The best part? It cost a fraction of what similar-looking lamps would have cost from a store.

Tips for a Successful Lamp Makeover

  • Prep is key: Take your time cleaning and taping the lamp before you start painting. A good cleaning ensures the paint adheres smoothly, and painter’s tape protects important areas.
  • Work in thin layers: When applying spray paint or Rub’NBuff, thin layers are better for an even, polished finish.
  • Blend for realism: For the vintage brass effect, use a chip brush to blend the Rub’NBuff as you apply it. This creates a more natural and realistic antique look.
  • Choose the right shade: A new lamp shade can make all the difference. Look for shades that complement your home decor and enhance the lamp’s new look.
  • Experiment with thrifted finds: Garage sales, thrift stores, and even local thrift stores are great places to find old lamps in good shape that are perfect for makeovers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a different color as the base coat?

Yes! While I used black paint to create a dramatic backdrop for the brass finish, you could experiment with different colors like white or charcoal for a slightly different effect.

What if my lamp has intricate details?

Rub’NBuff works wonderfully on textured surfaces. Use a small chip brush to get into crevices and highlight the lamp’s unique features.

Can I use this technique on other materials?

Absolutely! This simple makeover method works well on metal, wood, or ceramic lamp bases. Just ensure the surface is clean and primed before you start.

Do I have to use Rub’NBuff?

If you don’t have Rub’NBuff, you can use metallic gold craft paint instead. However, Rub’NBuff is known for its rich, realistic metallic finish and is easier to work with for lamp makeover ideas.

How long does the paint take to dry?

Spray paint typically dries to the touch within 30 minutes but its best to allow up to 24 hours for full curing before applying Rub’NBuff.

What should I do if my lamp base has chips or scratches?

For small scratches or light ware, simply apply a new coat of Rub’NBuff to the area. For deep or large scratches, lightly sand the lamp base to smooth out imperfections before applying spray paint. This will help create a uniform surface for the makeover.

How do I care for my newly painted lamp?

Avoid harsh cleaners. Dust the lamp with a soft cloth and spot-clean gently with a damp cloth if needed.
