Supplies

To make your own yarn hearts, you will need:
- Yarn (any type of yarn and color of your choice. I used this yarn for the hearts in the post.)
- Cardboard (a great way to repurpose old shipping boxes)
- Heart shape pattern
- Piece of paper
- Pen or pencil
- Razor knife
- Glue gun and glue sticks
Step-By-Step Instructions
Step 1: Download and Print the Heart Template
Begin by downloading and printing a heart template. This will help ensure that all of your yarn hearts are symmetrical. Using different sizes will allow you to create a variety of pieces perfect for different displays.
INFORMATION ABOUT PRINTABLES: All printables are password protected as a special thank you to subscribers. If you’d like to subscribe to receive the password, you can click here. Once you subscribe, you will receive an email with the password. I also include the password in each of my newsletters in case you lose it. Step 2: Cut Out the Heart Pattern
Once your heart template is printed, carefully cut out each heart shape using a pair of scissors. You can create as many as you need in different sizes for a layered look.

Step 3: Cut the Cardboard Hearts
Using your heart pattern, trace the heart shapes onto a piece of cardboard. Cut out each heart carefully using a razor knife. If children are assisting with this craft, make sure an adult handles this step for safety.

Step 4: Attach the First Piece of Yarn
Add a line of hot glue down the center of the heart. Press the end of the yarn onto the glue to secure it in place. This helps anchor the yarn, making it easier to wrap.

Step 5: Begin Wrapping the Yarn
Start wrapping the yarn around the heart. Begin in the center of the heart and wrap several times before alternating the angle. For the best coverage, create a T-shape by wrapping horizontally and vertically first. Then, continue wrapping in different directions to fill in all sides of the heart.

Step 6: Secure the End of the Yarn
Once the entire heart shape is covered in yarn, cut the yarn and use a small dab of hot glue to secure the end of the yarn to the back of the heart. Make sure it is tucked in neatly so it remains invisible from the front.

Step 7: Style and Enjoy

Your adorable yarn hearts are now ready to be used in your decor! These DIY yarn hearts can be styled in a variety of ways. Use them as:
- Bowl fillers for Valentine’s Day decor
- A charming garland
- Unique place settings
- Wedding decorations
- A cozy touch for a baby nursery
The neutral colors of certain yarns can also make these a stylish year-round decoration.

Tips
- Choose the right yarn: A soft, thick yarn covers the piece of cardboard more quickly, while a thinner yarn creates a more delicate look.
- Vary the sizes: Creating multiple sizes of yarn hearts will add depth and visual interest to your display.
- Experiment with colors: Neutral colors create a sophisticated and subtle look, while bright colors make the hearts pop.
- Use a craft store for supplies: If you don’t have yarn on hand, a quick trip to a craft store will provide plenty of options.
- Work on a protected surface: Since this project requires hot glue, be sure to work on a surface covered with wax paper or scrap cardboard.

Frequently Asked Questions
What type of yarn works best for this project?
Any type of yarn will work, but thicker yarns will provide more coverage and a fuller look. If you want a delicate and intricate appearance, a finer yarn is a great way to achieve that effect.
Can I use fabric glue instead of a hot glue gun?
Yes, fabric glue will work, but hot glue dries faster and provides a stronger hold. If using fabric glue, allow extra drying time before handling the hearts.
How do I make sure the yarn stays in place?
Start by securing the end of the yarn with hot glue at the center of the heart. As you wrap, pull the yarn tightly and secure the final piece of yarn with another dab of glue at the back.
What can I do with my finished yarn hearts?
These adorable yarn hearts can be used as bowl fillers, place settings, garlands, nursery decor, wedding decorations, or even thoughtful handmade gifts.
Can I make these without a template?
Yes! You can freehand draw a heart shape on a piece of paper and use it as a guide for cutting out your cardboard hearts.
Can kids help with this project?
Absolutely! This is a simple craft that children can help with, though an adult should handle the cutting of the cardboard. Kids can enjoy wrapping the yarn and creating their own unique designs.
How do I hang my yarn hearts?
To create a garland, simply glue or tie a small loop of yarn at the top of the heart and string multiple hearts together. You can also add a small ribbon loop to the top of the heart to hang them individually.

Making DIY yarn hearts is a simple and satisfying craft that brings warmth and handmade charm to your home. Whether you are looking for a festive Valentine’s Day decoration or a year-round cozy accent, these cute yarn hearts are a perfect craft for any occasion! Happy Crafting Y’all!
