Step-by-Step Instructions:

Step 1: Prepare the Styrofoam Balls

Start by preparing your Styrofoam balls, which will serve as the base for your topiary. Spray paint them with black flat spray paint. This step is crucial as the black paint will create a dark background, ensuring that any small gaps between the pinecones are less noticeable, giving your topiary a more polished and professional appearance.

Step 2: Begin Gluing the Pinecones

Once the Styrofoam balls are completely dry, it’s time to start attaching the pinecones. Using your hot glue gun, apply a line of glue along the surface of the Styrofoam ball. Begin placing the mini pinecones in an alternating pattern, pressing them gently into the glue. This alternating pattern will give your topiary a natural, organic look, mimicking the way pinecones appear in nature.

Step 3: Create an Indentation for the Dowel Rod

Before you cover the entire Styrofoam ball with pinecones, you’ll need to make a 1.5” indentation for the dowel rod. This step is essential for securely attaching the ball to the dowel rod later in the process. Use the dowel rod to gently press into the Styrofoam ball, creating a hole that will be used to assemble the topiary.

Step 4: Finish Covering the Styrofoam Ball

Continue gluing pinecones onto the Styrofoam ball, but be sure to leave the indentation you just created accessible. The pinecones should be closely placed to cover as much of the Styrofoam as possible, creating a full, lush appearance.

Step 5: Prepare the Dowel Rod

Next, it’s time to prepare the dowel rod. Measure and cut the dowel rod to the desired length based on the size of your urn or planter. For this project, a 16” dowel rod works well, especially if you’re creating a pair of topiaries. If you’re making two topiaries, one 36” dowel rod should suffice.

Once the dowel rod is cut to size, you have a few options for finishing it. You can paint it, stain it, or apply Rub’NBuff in Antique Gold for a touch of elegance. Alternatively, you can leave the dowel rod in its natural wood finish for a more organic look that complements the rustic charm of the pinecones.

Step 6: Assemble the Topiary

Now it’s time to bring all the elements together. Start by inserting dry floral foam into your urn or planter. This will hold the dowel rod securely in place. Insert the dowel rod into the center of the floral foam, ensuring it stands upright.

Finally, take your pinecone-covered styrofoam topiary ball and place it onto the top of the dowel rod, inserting the rod into the indentation you made earlier. Make sure it’s securely attached and sits straight.

Step 7: Add Finishing Touches

To complete your topiary, add a layer of Spanish moss around the base of the dowel rod in the planter or urn. This will cover the floral foam and add to the natural aesthetic of the piece. You can also embellish the pinecones with a touch of gold paint for a festive, holiday-ready look.

Tips for Creating the Perfect Pinecone Topiaries

  • Choosing Pinecones: Mini pinecones work best for this project. Make sure they’re clean and dry before use.
  • Avoid Glue Strings: Hot glue can sometimes leave stringy residue. To minimize this, work in small sections and keep a damp cloth handy to wipe away any strings as you go.
  • Customize the Finish: Experiment with different finishes for the dowel rod to match your decor. A dark wood stain can add warmth, while a gold finish can make the topiary more sophisticated and add a litte metallic sparkle.
